Lottie gets ready to play the Bar this Saturday..
Hello, welcome to the Saturday Sessions Interview! Thanks for sitting down with us and giving our crew the chance to learn more about you, your sound and most importantly what to expect at this Saturdays Release Yourself!
Now for those not familiar with you, please tell us a bit about yourself!
Well, I consider myself very lucky to have had a career doing what I love the most for 10 years now. I started collecting records when I was 7 and learnt to mix when I was 17 and after many, many non-paid warm up sets I got the gigs I wanted . I'm from the North of England originally, a child of the Haçienda! But have lived down in London for 15 years now and am lucky enough to play the best clubs in the world every weekend, produce my own music and do the odd radio show.
Now you’ve had a bit of a break recently becoming a mother, congratulations! Would you say the scene has changed much whilst you’ve been away?
I haven't really been away, I never stopped listening to new (and old) music I just took a few months out of clubland and then did fewer gigs that were nearer to home for a while. Now he's 2 I'm travelling a lot more and loving it even more than I used to. I've noticed the way people, (particularly us DJ's) communicate is very different, it's all in cyberspace. But I love that we can send and receive new material to each other so quickly. People don't give each other vinyl in clubs any more though, and you're more likely to read someones blog to find out about them than sit down with a music mag now.
Would you say the music has changed much in clubs much?
The high sonic quality of tracks coupled with the fantastic sound systems we have now mean stripped, very understated music is having a field day. Tracks which can sound dull in any other environment sound immense in the right club and that's great to work with. I also love big rave sounds though, noisy and exciting is always good too! When I play I have to be excited about every track I put on, the nature of electronic music is that it is constantly evolving and when you're gigging all the time you have to be inspired by your music so i like to keep it edgy and new all the time, I don't like hearing dated sounds on a dancefloor.
We’re really excited about having you play in The Bar this Saturday. But when you’re not in a club, what’s on your stereo? What new bands, non dance music stuff is doing it for you right now?
Well considering no-one's buying records any more it's surprising how much amazing stuff is out there at the moment. At the moment I'm loving MGMT (particulary "Electric Feel") ,A.Human, Ladyhawke, The Infadels, Beck, Feist, and The Shortwave Set. And if I'm in a nostalgic mood, Prince, Grace Jones and Kate Bush
Moving swiftly back to the house music... What tips for the top do you have for our Saturday Sessions crowd? What DJs and producers should we be checking out and why?
Riton's right on it at the moment, Alex Metric is a new, VERY talented bod from Brighton who's mix of The Infadels single "Free Things For Poor People" made the crowd go ballistic at Rock Ness the other weekend.
D'Julz is bang on the money with his recent productions and hones those stripped but strong productions perfectly and Siriusmo is Berlins finext export right now
What tunes are big in your Box at the moment?
Infadels - "Free Things For Poor People" (Alex Metric mix) (see above)
A.Human "Black Moon" (Dr Strangelove remix)
D' Julz - "For Those That Know"
Zoo Brazil - "Technik"
Ladyhawke - "Paris is Burning" (Peaches remix)
Proxy - "Dance In Dark"
Wolfgang Gartner - "Montezuma"
Mar-T "Gentlemen (John Dahlbeck mix)
Ocelot - "Our Time (Tom Neville remix)
Hercules & Love Affair - "You Belong" (Ritons re-rub)
Are you playing Ibiza this year?
I'm a resident at Manumission playing 6 dates so I'm extatic about that as you can imagine, especially as it's now at Amnesia so everything feels really fresh, they have the craziest parties in the world and we're going to have a ball this year. I'm also doing Space on the 31st August which I can't wait for, Space is usually my favourite gig of the year.
You’ve played Ibiza for many a season. Do you have any funny (printable) stories from the White Isle that you can share with us?
Ooh I 'm going with the "what happens in Ibiza stays in Ibiza' on this one.
And finally, you’re house is flooding, you’ve got 5 mins to go and rescue your gems from your record collection. What are the first ones you reach for?
All my Prince records, Derrick Mays mix of Deelite's "Wild Times", Robin Wants Revenge, T-Connection, all the Trax vinyl, my New Order collection and my 80's Madonna stuff.
Righty, I think that covers everything. We look forward to catching you this Saturday in The Bar!
